CONTEMPORARY SITUATION OF RAINFOREST
PEOPLES
The University of Kent at Canterbury is part of a consortium of
institutions which has received a contract from the European
Commission for research on the future of tropical rainforest
peoples. In connection with this, applications are invited for one,
two and three year research training positions, leading to the
award of a Postgraduate Diploma, MA or MSc in Environmental
Anthropology, and M.Phil. and Ph.D degrees, in the Department of
Sociology and Social Anthropology, beginning 1 October 1995. Nine
month traineeships not leading to the award of a degree may also be
available.
The persons appointed should preferably have a good honours degree
in a social or environmental science subject, be citizens of Papua
New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Belize or
Guyana, and be committed to field research on some aspect of human-
forest interaction. Knowledge of French would be an advantage.
Selected candidates will also be expected to liaise with research
centres in other EU countries and in the countries in which their
research is conducted, as well as collaborate in the work of the
Ethnobiology Laboratory in Canterbury under the general direction of
Professor R. F. Ellen.
Each position will be linked to a studentship which will cover fees
and maintenance at a rate to be determined. It will also be possible
to claim reasonable additional research expenses.
Informal enquiries may be made to Professor R. F. Ellen, tel: (0227)
