RESEARCH POSITIONS IN SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY
LEADING TO THE AWARD OF A PH.D

The University of Kent at Canterbury is part of a consortium of
institutions which has received a contract from the European
Commission for research on the future of tropical rainforest
peoples. In connection with this, applications are invited for two
three year research positions leading to the award of a Ph.D in the
Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, beginning 1
October 1995.

The persons appointed should preferably have a good honours degree
in social anthropology or an allied subject, be committed to
research in Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, New
Caledonia, Belize or Guyana, and be residents of the European
Union. Knowledge of French would be an advantage. Selected
candidates will be expected to undertake fieldwork on some aspect
of human-forest interaction, liaise with research centres in other
EU countries and in the countries in which their research is
conducted, and collaborate in the work of the Ethnobiology
Laboratory in Canterbury under the general direction of Professor R.
F. Ellen.

Each position will be linked to a studentship which will cover fees
at the home rate and a maintenance grant equivalent to that offered
by UK Research Councils. It will also be possible to claim
reasonable additional research expenses.
