I don't read Dear Abby, but what you say she espouses might lead one to
infer that breastfeeding in public is okay. Was this mentioned? Is it
okay for me to lead an email thread in this direction?

I wonder how a 'civalized' society develops such an unnatural taboo wrt
breastfeeding in public? (Aren't there still laws against it, somewhere?)

I speculate that people's disdain of breastfeeding in public is related to
an inability to comfortably embrace the dual nature of breasts (no puns
intended--by dual I mean erotic and lactic). But there must be a more
scientific explanation?
