Sidney Mintz wrote an overview of Haitian nationhood, emphasizing the
peasantry, which is Chapter 10 of his Caribbean Transformations (Aldine,
1974; a more recent edition is in print). The political material in this
chapter is dated, and one would want to learn about Aristide and base
communities in recent Haiti, but much that Mintz writes is still
informative. I would not call this particular chapter "ethnographic",
though.
Michel-Rolph Trouillot has published a book on Haiti with Monthly Review
Press; unfortunately I can't find the reference immediately at hand.
I also would like to hear lists of/comments on Haitian ethnographies.
