THE AMERICAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE IN TURKEY
ARIT FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM 1997-1998*
The American Research Institute in Turkey will offer a number of
fellowships for research in Turkey for the academic year 1997-1998.
Increased doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships will be available
in a range of tenures (two to twelve months) and amounts.
Scholars and advanced graduate students engaged in research on
ancient, medieval or modern times in Turkey, in any field of the
humanities and social sciences, are eligible. Applicants are
expected to be affiliates of educational institutions in the United
States or Canada. Research permission is required by the Turkish
government.

*The fellowship program of the American Research Institute in
Turkey is supported in part by grants from the United States
Information Agency.

ARIT-NEH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM 1997-1998
The American Research Institute in Turkey takes pleasure in
inviting applications for two or three post-doctoral fellowships
made possible by support from the National Endowment for the
Humanities.
The fields of study cover all periods in the humanities including
prehistory, history, art, archaeology, literature, and
linguistics, as well as interdisciplinary aspects of cultural
history.
The fellowships may be held from four to twelve months. The
stipends range from $10,000 to $30,000.

KRESS-ARIT FELLOWSHIP IN HISTORY OF ART
AND ARCHAEOLOGY 1997-1998
The American Research Institute in Turkey is most pleased to
announce a new fellowship for 1997-1998 made possible by the
generous support of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.
Candidates should be engaged in advanced dissertation research
that requires study in Turkey in the fields of history of art
and/or archaeology.
The fellowship offers support for up to one academic year in
the amount of $13,500. Awards for shorter periods of time are
also possible.

INTENSIVE ADVANCED TURKISH LANGUAGE STUDY
SUMMER 1997
Intensive summer program offers the equivalent of one year's study
in advanced Turkish, either spoken or reading. Fellowships cover
air fare, tuition, room and board, and a modest stipend.

COUNCIL OF AMERICAN OVERSEAS RESEARCH CENTERS (CAORC)
FELLOWSHIPS FOR ADVANCED MULTI-COUNTRY RESEARCH
Twelve awards of up to $6,000 each, with an additional
$3,000 for travel. Open to scholars pursuing research
on broad questions of multi-country significance in the
fields of humanities, social sciences, and related natural
sciences in countries in the Near and Middle East and South
Asia. Doctoral candidates and established scholars with US
citizenship are eligible to apply as individuals or in teams.

SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH COUNCIL FELLOWSHIPS FOR RESEARCH
AND TRAINING ON THE NEAR AND MIDDLE EAST
Pre-dissertation, dissertation, post-doctoral and advanced
fellowships in varying amounts and tenures in support of
research in the Near and Middle East, including North Africa
and Turkey. Open to U.S. citizens. Research must be
concerned with the period since the beginning of Islam.
Application deadline for pre-doctoral fellowships: 1 November 1996.
