I am not exactly sure if this fits into this discussion, but the theories
of Rene Girard are very interesting in this respect. Difference, other and
the self are highly interdependent and vital for the functioning of a
society.
His theory has a lot to do with violence and where it does come from. Some
points of that theory might be of interest and help to find out more about
the other and the self.
