The NYT Mag piece on Charles Murray referred to his youth in an idealized
Iowa, where he was unaware of the class tensions that his friends recall
keenly. At the same time, Robert Bartley, editor of the editorial page
of the Wall Street Journal, friend of big business and defender of
Reaganomics, says *his* touchstone is the values he was brought up with in
Iowa.
That must be some state. One gets the impressions there are no small
farmers or laborers there, or homeless folks. Edenic, eirenic, idyllic.
Anthropologists must find it fascinating.
