In summary, the categories that social scientists and government have used
to identify and (try to) correct inequality of resources and opportunity,
have come back to haunt us in the "reification" (sensu Gould) of "race" as
a defining characteristic -- and *explanatory* not an *intervening*
variable -- in various social, political, and educational outcomes.
