Kinship in Early Europe

A colleague who is currently researching the evolution of kinship systems
through early Euro-American history has asked if I would post the
following questions to the list:
1) Why were the ancient Romans so strictly monogamous?
2) What system of descent did the Franks follow on the eve of the fall of
the Western Roman Empire?
Any direct responses or leads on sources that deal with the questions
would be most appreciated.
