Here in Israel, non-religious educators long ago realized that titles like
MR/Mrs, Dr.
Professor etc were artifical barriers to effective communication and that
respect
was something to be earned, not automatically granted by age, education,
race, religion or social class. As a result individuals who were
privliged to be brought up in this system in which everyone is on a first
name basis are not intimidated by educators and those in positions of
dominance and power. Being on a first name basis with students makes for
a much freer exchange of ideas. Having lived here for over 30 years and seen
this in action, particularly with young children who consequently are not
intimidated by adults, makes for a refreshing and healthy exchange of ideas,
which communication should be all about.
