I seem to be on the same wave-len gth, Denise. I too address students by
their last names, preceded by Mr. or Ms
and I also prefer they call me by my last name, which they usually
precede by Professor or Doctor. Yes, I it is a question of intimacy. In
fact, when we get to know each other better, I get a kick when students
address me in the halls or outside the classroom as "Hi, doc.."
Once when I was shopping for a dentist, the one I was waiting for in the
reception area came out with "Hello, Ruby," and when I answered with
"Alec, hello," we both knew we were not made for each other. Ruby Rohrlich
