Request for sources--history of paleoanthropology

I was wondering if anyone knew of good sources, secondary or primary,
relating to paleoanthropology's origins--when it is that people began
researching human origins "scientifically", and more specifically, why.
Given the importance of cultural politics in nineteenth-century
anthropology, I find it hard to believe that it is simply "curiosity".
I have some Cuvier references, but have been unable to find basic
historical works about paleoanthropolgy, even in encyclopedias of science.
Thanks for any ideas.
