AMEN! to Anita Cohen-Williams' comment about lack of library skills as An
Affliction of the Profession! And while library ignorance is not limited to
anthropologists, it flourishes among them as almost nowhere else! I think
it's a combination of the fieldnote tradition AND that of the gentleman (sic)
scholar; a sr. editor at the U of Chicago Press once told a
Library-Anthropology Research Group (LARG) meeting that they sold more books
at the AAA meetings than at any other scholarly convention, suggesting
non-library access routes. Here in Ivy-land I have to assume we have as
well-prepared library "patrons" as anybody ever does, and I'm regularly
astounded at how little some --not all-- know, both fac & student. All the
fac. have an info strategy that works, obviously, but FEW have one that a
librarian couldn't massively improve in a half-hour one-to-one. And that
certainly includes some anthropologists!
Anyway, point well taken (and hope it stimulates a response, tho' am not
holding my breath.)
