I am reasonably certain that many people do not mean the same things by
sustainability. As geoarchaeologistand geochemist, I define the term
to mean that the dynamics of the culture and economy can be sustained by the
environment in which it exists. This does not imply stasis, but
rather continued change, with the proviso that both the base economy
and the changes it undergoes do not cause destruction to the environment
beyond its capacity to absorb it. I suspect that many scientists view this issue in the same manner.
