I s'pose that de-escalating from "killing the messenger"
to "understanding the messenger" *is* a progressive step,
but it sure sounds to me as though it's time we looked
at the message. If the publication process is as important
as we say it is, we need to STUDY THE SYSTEM to learn why
we try to balance it on the backs of over-worked altruists
like Professor Wilk. Reviewers *must* be paid--maybe in
dollars and pfennings, maybe in more explicit professional
standing.
The reviewing system is precarious even in the best-funded
fields (clinical medicine?, software engineering, ...), from
what I know.
