James Murphy claimed that more "cleansing" had been done in the name of
racism than sexism. I would remind him that during the late middle ages
and the early renaissance, the great witch hunts eliminated many
people, whom recent estimates have noted were ~75-90% women.
although this was not done in the name of sexism, the end effect
was a significant number of women murdered. and before dan foss
reminds us that this event was closely tied to attempts by the catholic
church to maintain some form of religious control and to eliminate
animism as a belief, i would agree that this mass murder event was
indeed also religious.
