I am enjoying this discussion. A lot of good ideas have been
voiced. However, for the neophyte, could someone give
suggestions on the basics--i.e., tents, boots, clothing for
varying climates, cooking/heating equipment, etc. For instance,
if a person were to go shopping for a tent for a specific climate
(cold or hot) or a particular environment (high elevations or
tropical), what should that person look for before investing.
Are there any particularly informative books on the subject
beyond your usual camping equipment guides that could be
recommended?

Any information in this realm from seasoned field anthros would
be greatly appreciated.
