I also found ear plugs very useful in fieldwork. When the village bands
play until 3 or 4 in the morning, and shortly thereafter the roosters and
other animals start up--the peace and quite of country life becomes
quite elusive.

I also took a small hand operated water filter system with me. It was
annoying to use and time consuming--it also wasn't a guarantee against
problems, but I would like to think it cut down on the number of times
my wife and I found ourselves laid up with intestinal problems.
