I heartily second the vote for ear plugs as essential field gear in
rural areas. Those are number one on my list for fieldwork in
Indonesia. I would also add the following:
-silica gel & heavy duty zip lock bags or tupperware (for storing
camera equipment in tropical climate).
-fruit flavored tums (served a dual purpose as a calcium supplement
and as a discrete midnight snack when nothing else was
available to eat!).
-jungle juice (for the mosquitos).
-"itch eraser" (takes the itch out of mosquito bites when you run out
of jungle juice).
