There is an association called the Society for the Anthropological Study of
Play that has been around for years. It's a curious mix of anthropologists,
sociologists, folklorists, and sports and phys ed types. As a group, they are
crude, rude, unbelieveably vulgar and, therefore, great fun to be with. They
publish annual proceedings (Leisure Press) that are choeck full of articles
dealing with sociological and anthropological aspects of sports. There is also
a listserve group called PLAY-L (You can look it up on the gopher) that should
be a good source of bibliography.
