In reading Seeker1's summaries of Daniel Bell, I am reminded constantly
of the literature on modernism, its constant preoccupation with great
divides and complete social transformations.
Most of the great changes which Bell saus are heralding the postmodern
era seem to me to be partial, gradual and contestable rather than
sweeping tides. They also seem to me to be characteristics of western
white intellectuals rather than general social transformations. All that
stuff people seeing ideologies for what they are...has Bell actually
spent some time with right-to-lifers, or Hindu fundamentalists? Sounds
like too much time reading social science and not enough time talking
with the 99.99% of the world's population that is not living in a University!
Grum grump.
