This is mostly NASA PR. The first plastics where developed before NASA.
Many (or perhaps all) of the plastics where developed for reasons other
than space flight. "Space age" is just a way of saying modern. The trip
to the moon was a stunt. The real science at NASA goes largely unnoticed
by the public at large. The unmanned probes to various planets have
yelded some truely outstanding science. It seems however that outstanding
science doesn't get much support so NASA has to resort to telling you that
they have found a better way to keep you beer cold.
