It has been my opinion for quite a while that Mr. Malinowski was a little
too ready to believe that Trobrianers were ignorant fools about sex and
babies.

How many anthropologists have found their informants to be playing with
them, making up silly names and kinship affiliations? My bet is that
this isn't rare.
