Rochester program threatened

The administration at the University of Rochester has recently announced its
intention to dismantle its graduate program in anthropology. Readers of this
forum may know that the UR anthropology department has long had an outstanding
reputation as one of the foremost graduate programs in social anthropology in
the US, and has been one of the most successful anthropology departments in
terms of placing its PhDs in academic positions. The current move is reportedly
being taken as a cost saving measure, another example of faculty and students
being forced to compensate for an administration's fiscal incompetence.
