Claude Levi-Strauss has several interesting articles in Structural
Anthropology, volume 1. One is about a sorceror in the NW Coast who is
cynical about his own technique (which involves palming and producing a
bloody blob from the patient's body), but gradually becomes convinced by
his own success.

Bronislaw Malinowski's classic Coral Gardens and their Magic has tons of
spells, and lots on the psychology of using them, but nothing on sleight
of hand, as I recall.
