Laika, the dog, died during her mission when her oxygen ran out. The
Russians had no plans for her re-entry.

Ham, the first hominoid in space, was not destroyed after his mission, but
his "reward" for risking his life was over 16 years of solitary confinement
in a zoo cage. The last two years of his life were spent with a group of
chimpanzees at the North Carolina Zoological Park.
