Thank you very much for your answers.
We do not disagree on much of what you said. I would agree that there
is a connection between laryngeal descent and speech; but we have
different ideas about the nature of the connection - which was the
cause and which the effect. And I think Wheeler's case became weaker
as the original-style savannah scenario became modified, because it
depends heavily on the assumption of time obligatorily spent in the sun
at the hottest times of day. At the period he was thinking of
(pre-Lucy, because pre-bipedal) the balance of evidence now makes that
behaviour seem far less credible.
