Don't chimps carry older infants on their shoulders and backs? Pre-humans
could have carried at least toddlers on their shoulders, even if they
walked upright, and the toddlers could have held on to their mothers' long
hair. Small infants could have been tied behind their mothers by vines,
skins, or even hair, as babies are even today.
