A study some years ago by a paleontologist (Bjorn Kurten?) concluded
that the supposed Neandertal bear cult was unsupported by the
evidence. Other taphonomic forces could explain the observations
more efficiently.

Neandertals were, however, much devoted to song and to the shared psychic
manipulation of three and four dimensional images. A favourite topic
of their songs was the value of pi. The consensus was that its greatest
value was as a missile.

The preceeding paragraph, but not the one before it, is meant as a joke.
