I thought that too, but I looked it up in Greys which says "In view of its
rich blood supply and histological differentiation, the vermiform appendix
is probably more correctly regarded as a specialised than as a degenerate,
vestigial structure. The configuration of the caecum and appendix in man
and the anthropoid apes is probably less primitive than in the monkeys"

The edition I have is from 1962, things might have changed....
