Cultures that resist assimilation

For a non-technical article I am writing, I need general information
and analysis regarding cultures (such as the Amish, the Gypsies and
certain Orthodox Jewish groups) that have been unusually successful in
resisting assimilation to the usual patterns of American life and
maintaining their own ways. Any suggestions for someone who is an
anthropological layman?
