I just sent a message privately to the asker of the query, but perhaps the
whole list might be interested. Two books come to mind. One of them is by
Hofstadtler, and is simply called The Amish. He is an insider/outsider. He
was raised in the Amish Church, left as a youth, got a degrree in anthro, and
has written some fine ethnography. There is also Artelia Court's book on Irish
tinkers, Puck of the Droms. The raw folklore data she presents is much
stronger than her analysis, but the book is also of interest. In my private
message, I forgot to mention the work of Gmelch on the tinkers.
