Sarah Mack asked for suggestions of readings on gender for someone getting
back in to the field. One source that I think has not been mentioned so
far, but which I found helpful is:

Roberta Gilchrist, Gender and Material Culture: the Archaeology of
Religious Women. (Routledge, London, 1994).

The first chapter of this book, which examines Medieval religious
communities of women, is a wonderfully lucid articulation of current
approaches and issues related to interpreting gender in the material
and historical record. It is relatively free of jargon which can be
daunting to the uninitiated, and includes an excellent bibliography
for further reading. It is well worth while, even for those of us
whose field work is somewhat different.

Hope you find this helpful...
