Study in Africa
Spring 1995 Semester
An external studies program by Langara College in association with the
Open University of British Columbia.
Langara College is proud to once again offer students an
incredible opportunity to obtain class credits while participating in a
field school in East Africa. In conjunction with the Open University,
this single semester program begins in January and includes approximately
sixty-five days of travel, learning and safari camping in the lush beauty
of Kenya and Uganda.
The theme for the 1996 program is biodiversity. East Africa is a
vast region, still relatively untouched by the 21st century and teeming
with fabulous wildlife. Students in the 1996 program will experience
first-hand the tremendous diversity in plant and animal life that is East
Africa as well as the astounding history and cultural richness of the
people inhabiting this area. The initial travel itinerary carries the
students through tropical savannah grasslands and woodlands, to shrubland
and desert, thru high altitude forest and alpine meadows. Complete
lectures and classes are presented daily under canvas tents, as well as
seminars by invited guests. The second portion of the tour is completed
on the east Kenyan coast, world famous for coral reefs, white sand
beaches and mangrove systems. The combination of field studies with game
drives, visits to archeological digs, interaction with the indigenous
peoples in both traditional and contempory villages provides an exciting,
challenging and unique education platform for students in Science and in
Arts.
Students may obtain up to fifteen full hours of credit from a
variety of upper and lower division courses in Biology, Anthropology and
Archeology. This program meets the requirements for Canada Student Loans
and fully eligible for income tax deduction (students and parents). The
cost of this program includes all airfare and ground transportation
costs, accomodations, meals, all park entrance fees, and all taxes and
gratuities, and is expected to be $9960 Canadian. Tuition costs will be
determined by the number of classes students enrol in. This external
studies program offers an opportunity for an unforgettable semester of
study in one of the great wilderness areas of the world.
