Secular Uses of Sacred Space?

I am searching for any primary or secondary sources that describe
the secular uses of sacred spaces (churches and cathedrals).
Although my chronological parameter is France and my geographical
parameter is the central Middle Ages (1100-1300), I would appreciate
references to _any_ articles, books, etc. that discuss the issue.
If anyone knows of such sources (again, even if the source does not
discuss medieval France specifically), I would be very grateful if
