Subject: New York Times Article on India's Caste System

The Sunday New York Times, October 20, 1996 (page E 3 - World in Review -)
has an article by NYT reporter Barbara Crossette entitled "Caste May be
India's Moral Achilles' Heel" in which she reports on the efforts of
Yogesh Varhade of Torontos Ambedkar Centre for Justice and Peace (email
address: acjp@torfree.net ). Mr. Varhade has successfully persuaded the
United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination to
ask India to report back next year on what it is doing to educate Indians
about their rights and to guarantee constitutional protections. The
article targets the plight of rural untouchables in India.

The article also notes that last week the international organization Human
Rights Watch noted a "tenacious and widespread" belief in the inherent
inferiority of lower castes and untouchables - this in a new study on
India titled "Children in Bondage". The article observes that while India
is making some positive moves, there is much to be corrected and - with
the passage of time - likely to be much to answer for.
