I was always taught that Sunday was the 1st day of the week and I believe
that comes from the Old Testament tradition that God rested on the Seventh
day. This was celebrated each week on the Sabbath day, which was
Saturday. (I wonder if the Spanish Sabado which looks suspiciously like
it shares a common root with Sabath does not bolster this argument. But I
digress...)

Websters New Collegiate Dictionary also defines Saturday as the 7th day of
the week.
