Certainly not: the Mandan villages played an important role in the
Lewis and Clark expedition, which could not have continued without their
permission, let alone help. Nevertheless, the smallpox ravages were
important in weakening them to the point that the horse cultures soon
eclipsed them on the Plains.

Check out soc.culture.native; I've seen Mandans post there once or
twice.
