If you would like some references in order to do some searching here are
some titles you should look up.

Giglioli, Pier Paolo
1972, Language and Social Context. Penguin Books (this is a really good
collection of works by some of the top linguists ever)

Holland, Dorothy and Naomi Quinn
1987, Cultural Models in Language and Thought. Cambridge; Cambridge
University Press

Lindstrom, Lamont
1990, Knowledge and Power: in a South Pacific Society. Washington D.C.,
Smithsonian Institution Press (this is a good one on how discourse,
talking, helps organise ad form society)

Romaine, Suzanne
1994, Language in Society: an Introduction to Sociolinguistics. Oxford;
Oxford University Press (this one is allright but not the best of the lot)
