Names: cultural preferences?

Does anyone know of any research done on the general topic of
given-name preferences among subcultures within a diverse
cultural environment? For example, in modern American culture
the name "Robert" might be popular, or avoided, within our
various ethnic communities.

I'm interested in both how certain sounds may have distinct
cultural meanings (and therefore would attract/repel as
name choices) AND in raw measurement data.

Any help or references greatly appreciated.

Richard
