Timothy Johns wrote an article about the domestication of toxic tubers in
the Andes, the eating of which is occasionally accompanied by geophagy.
Apparently there are glycoalkaloids in the potatoes which irritate the
stomach and intestines, and these symptoms are relieved by the judicious
ingestion of a few bites of clay. I can provide the precise reference, if
you really want.
