Hello, Denizens of the World of Anthropology!

First, let me once again thank those who responded to my request for citations
about the origins and history of the concept of culture. This posting is a
summary of the citations I received. Hopefully, all of you have already
received a more personal note of thanks by e-mail.

John Arnss supplied a text with a brief history of anthropological theory
titled Crapo, Richley. "Cultural anthropology: understanding ourselves and
others." 3rd ed. Guilford, Conn.: Dushkin Publishing Group, 1993.

Nicole Yuen supplied the following citations:

Rosaldo, Renato. "Remaking Culture: The Remaking of Social Analysis." 1989,
1993.
Fox, Richard, ed. "Recapturing Anthropology: Working in the Present." 1991.
In particular, Nicole recommends the essays titled "Rewriting Culture" by
Graham Watson and "Writing Against Culture" by Lila Abu-Lughod.
Clifford, James. "The Predicament of Culture." 1988.

Nicole also recommends the introduction to Eric Wolfe's "Europe and the Peoples
Without History" (Nope, Nicole, I don't mind a take from the left (smile)).

Finally, Tamara Little supplied the following:

Whittaker, Elvi.
"Culture: The Reification Under Siege." Studies in Symbolic Interaction,
13 (1992): 107-117.
LaCapra, Dominick.
"Culture and Ideology: From Geertz to Marx." Chap. n "Soundings in
Critical Theory." Ithaca and London: Cornell University Press, 1989.

Again, thanks to all of you, and good luck in your future work.
