Racial or gender discrimination is no longer like a door that is shut for
some people, open for others. Rather, it is more like a hurdle-race, with
the hurdles being a few inches higher for some people, making things a little
bit harder on each step of life's competition. Since all of us have to
jump these hurdles, most of us probably do not notice the difference, and
resent efforts that try to make the barriers more equal.
