If you really want to get into a subject steer clear of unmoderated news
groups - and go for the subscription services.. its clear that 'the stages
and lifecycles' of threads and tendencies on news groups like this either
require infinite patience and wading through mud for 6 - 8 months at a
time for maybe one small gem of a thread... or simply getting out and
reading a few *real books or magazine articles* instead.

I have one favourite news group - alt.fan.ivor-cutler, - it
only has about 1 message per 2 months (!) the favourite sub
service ortrad-l sometimes has total silence for 3-4 months
at a time...
