One possibility would be a logical jump from animal husbandry (sp?)
In animals with distinct mating cycles, this connection would be
easier to spot. I would think that someone reasoned this out at
about the same time, or before, selective breeding in cattle, horses,
sheep, etc. began.

Opinions expressed above are mine, at least it tastes like my foot.
