Here is a wonderful reference:

Edwards, E. 1992 _Anthropology and Photography: 1860-1920_
New Haven & London: Yale University Press.

this wonderful book will lead you to many other references... it
is a compilation of articles by many people who are interested in
the two fields... in particular Margaret B. Blackman articles and
Barthes would be essential... you will find these in the books
references...
