software for notes?

A friend of mine is going preparing to leave on her field study and she asked if
I could find some software for her. So I'm asking for your help.....

She needs software for taking and annotating her notes. We've tried word but it
doesn't allow for complex searches of the annotations.

Any suggestions would be appreciated...
