Not really. While the streets of upper Manhattan are laid out on a
rectangular grid, they are not aligned to true north. Not even close.
If you're walking "uptown" on an Avenue (I'm assuming that no one
would be foolish enough to actually DRIVE there...), you'll be heading
north-northeast. The grid is tilted about 15 degrees clockwise from
vertical, as you look at the map.
What this has to do with Anthropology I don't know, but I couldn't let
your statement go unchallenged.
