I recall reading in Solzhenitsyn that a hundred thousand Cossacks
fled from the Soviet Union; and fought for the Allies during
World War II. One of the secret understandings that the West
came to with Stalin, was that these people would be shipped back
to the Soviet Union after the war was over. The troops were told
to turn in their arms for new weapons were to be issued, and then
herded into railway cars and shipped to the Soviet Union, where
they ended up in the Gulag. So writes Solzhenitysn.
