I just returned from 16 months in rural Guatemala where I used the Sony
TCM-77V, the middle of the line in their Pressman series. It cost about
$225, but if you search I bet you can find it mail order for $175. They
make a lower end TCM (55, I think) which sell for a lot cheaper, but
it doesnt have some of the handy features like fine-adjusting, variable
speed control, which you will appreciate when you begin to turn all those
field tapes into transcriptions. The higher end model is sweet, and I would
love to have one--it has al the bells and whistles--but if you are on a budget
like me . . .

Happy trails,

Ted
